"Efendisine Sabırla Katlanacaktır": Geoffroy de la Tour Landry'nin kitabında hiyerarşiler ve duygular

This thesis aims to examine a fourteenth-century work written by Geoffroy de La Tour Landry, a knight from Anjou. The book was written between 1371 and 1372 CE, and was meant to educate the knight's daughters in religious and noble matters, and also to teach them how to read. The knight's book is composed of various stories some of which are from his own experience while most are Biblical or stories with no particular setting. This thesis employs close-reading methods to understand the knight's perspectives of social hierarchies, his attitudes towards social groups. The thesis applies the methods of the history of emotions to explore the knight's emotional world and what lessons he teaches to his daughters by focusing on two emotions: love and fear. The knight shows deep devotion to religious matters and to charity towards lesser orders, despite the turmoil of the fourteenth-century, while having a moderateamount of distrust towards the highest orders of society especially in regards to his daughters. The knight also utilizes emotions in his book and by combining love and fear, constructs an emotional framework for his daughters that ensures that they will obey their husbands at all costs. Earlier works on the knight's book have mostly focused on pedagogical aspects. This thesis reexamines the knight's book from two perspectives to reintroduce a valuable vernacular work from the Middle Ages into academic discourse. This book can contextualize late medieval society from the perspective of a knight in two regards: social and emotional life.
