The effect of mnemonic vocabulary learning strategy and story telling on young learners' vocabulary learning and retention

Abstract (EN)

Coping with heavy load of vocabulary items, has always been problematic for English language learners. This case study aims at helping students to improve their vocabulary learning and retention skills. Another purpose of the study is to increase students? level of motivation, interest, enjoyment and pleasure towards vocabulary learning by offering meaningful and rich input. To this purpose, we integrated visual mnemonic vocabulary learning strategy into the existing language syllabus through storytelling activities. As sources of data Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS), Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI), Attitude Questionnaire and Interviews were administered. The results were discussed by content analysis and One-Way Repeated Measures of ANOVA. Findings depict the positive contribution of the implementation.
