Examining the opinions of prospective teachers about the assessment and evaluation process of courses in department of primary education in faculty of education

The aim of this research is to determine the views of prospective teachers about the assessment and evaluation process of courses in Department of Primary Education in Faculty of Education. Although the research is in the form of scanning model, it also shows descriptive quality. In the research a quastionnaire based on five point likert scale composing of 33 articles, is used as a tool for data collection in order to determine views of prospective teachers about the assessment and evaluation process of courses in the Department of Primary Education in Faculty of Education. The sample group of the research composes of 820 prospective teachers studying in Department of Primary Education in Faculties of Education in Fırat and Dicle Universities. These teachers are chosen via random sampling method. During the analysis of datum obtained from the questionnaires ''SPSS 16.0'' statistical package program is used. The frequency (N) , percentage (%) and arithmetic avarages of the views included in the questionnaire, are taken into consideration. According to the views of prospective teachers, it is determined that % 38.01 faculty members use the tehniques included in the books , % 31.47 of them use lecturing method , % 8. 24 of them use cooperation learning, % 3.83 of them use brainstorming technique and % 1.48 multiple intelligences method in the academic process. According to the views of prospective teachers, it is determined that % 32.95 of faculty members use written exams , % 22.41 of them use tests , % 17.77 use assignments , %15.18 of them use projects , % 6.14 of them use performance rating scales and % 5.54 of them use student product files in the evaluation process. These results show that faculty members mostly use written exams and tests in the evaluation of academic process in the Department of Primary Education in Faculty of Education. According to the prospective teachers, it is concluded that faculty members search different activities and materials from the internet, don't attend the classes and don't motivate the students enough before beginning the course. According to the prospective teachers, it is concluded that faculty members don't make intermediate evaluations and short – term quizzes enough. It is identified that prospective teachers have different views about some articles according to the gender variable in the preparation, assessment and evaluation phases of the courses. It is determined that prospective teachers studying in the pre-school teaching programme have more positive judgement than those studying in the Social Science teacching programme in the preparation, assessment and evaluation phases in Department of Primary Education in Faculty of Education in terms of Faculty members.
