Abstract (EN)

This study aims to show what kind of identity was attempted to be established in children ‎and which kind of approach was used in this context based on the content of school textbooks ‎used in 2nd Constitutional Monarchy Period on the foundations of relationship between education ‎and ideology. Designed as a qualitative research towards this purpose, main materials used for ‎this study comprise textbooks taught in primary schools of the said period, including Kırâat ‎‎(Reading) (15), Târih (History) (25) and Ma'lûmât-ı Medeniyye ve Ahlakiyye/Musâhabât-ı ‎Ahlâkiyye, Târihiyye, Sıhhiyye ve Medeniyye (Civil and Ethical Knowledge/Discourses on Ethics, ‎History, Health and Civil Studies) (20). As it can be inferred from the numbers in brackets, a total ‎of 60 textbooks of this description were selected. Criteria for this selection included the ‎textbooks in question being prepared in accord with the curriculum programmes in force at the ‎time as well as being approved by the Ministry of Education. Document analysis method is used ‎to gather data from these textbooks. The gathered data were analysed with the content analysis ‎technique. According to the results obtained in this context, while possessing some of the ‎characteristics of the previous period, the identity established in children to prepare them for the ‎future showed significant differences from the previous period. ‎ Keywords: Education, Ideology, Children, Primary Schools, Textbooks and Identity.‎
