The vi̇ews of teachers wi̇thi̇n the soci̇al studi̇es about educati̇on uni̇ons

The aim of this study is to determine the views of Social Studies teachers on teachers' unions. Working group of the research consisted of 300 primary and secondary school teachers and adminastrators working in Kastamonu city center in the 2014-15 academic year. The reasearch data was collected using a five-point Likert-type questionaire "Unions Association and Attitude Scale", which was developed by Akbulut in his reasearch "Unions and motivation Relations: Education Sector An Investigation '. The questionare we used to collect data consists of three parts. In the first part of the questionaire, there are 14 independent questions for teachers asking personal information. In the second part, there is a 5-point likert type scale consisting 21 questions aimed to determine the views of the Social Studies teachers on teachers' unions. The part where the respondents can add more of their views and opinions is the third part of the questionaire. The data collection tool of the study was applied by the researcher himself to the Social Studies teachers and administrators who work in 59 primary and secondary public schools within the central district municipality of Kastamonu, visiting them and explaining the purpose of the study. Data collection tools were distributed on a volunteer basis and they were recollected by hand and by taking some help from the school principals a few days later considering the intensity of their work. The data gathered through the research tool were analyzed with SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for The Windows, and for the evaluation of the data descriptive statistical methods (Standard Deviation, Average, Count, Percent) was used. In the comparison of quantitiative data, t- test was used to compare two groups. In case of more than two groups, Unidirectional (One way) ANOVA test was used to compare parameters and Scheffe test was used to determine the group which caused the difference. The relationship between the variables of the study were analyzed using Pearson's correlation. The findings was evaluated in the 95% confidence interval at 5% significance level.For the likert-type scale used in this study, the respondents were asked to specify an option, ranging from very positive to very negative (5-strongly agree, 4-agree, 3-undecided, 2- disagree, 1- strongly disagree). Results are scattered over a wide scale 5:00 to 1:00 = 4:00 points. The results of the study are as follows: within the Social Studies course teachers and administrators; branch, working time in the same institution, being a member of teachers' union, suggesting a friend to be a member of a teachers' union were statistically significant differences. The perceptions of classroom teachers on unions and unionization were more positive than Social Studies teachers. When the mean scores of attitude toward work time in the institution studied, the teachers who have worked from 6 to 10 years had a more positive attitude towards teachers' unions than the teachers who have worked 16 years or more. It was found that there was no statistically significant difference in the views of Social Studies teachers and administrators on unions, with respect to "gender, age, position, seniority, marital status, education, recognition of different unions, the years of being a union member, being a member of different unions, having a family member being a union member".
