Özet (EN)
This dissertation study analyzes the fundamental similarities and differences in between two metaphoric approaches stated, one after 100 years the other, with regards to the form. The first metaphor 'Form Follows Function' was stated by Louis H. Sullivan towards the end of 19th century, and the second metaphor 'Form Follows Flow' was put forward by Sim Van der Ryn in late 20th century. Focusing on the unclear needs of the Industrial Society at the time, 'Form Follows Function' metaphor has been analyzed in terms of its origins. Bringing about the 'Functionalism' approach, impact of this metaphor on the period it emerged has been studied within the framework of the Bauhaus School. Based on environmental problems, origins of the 'Form Follows Flow' metaphor has been studied. It has been demonstrated how the Ecological Design have evolved with inspirations from nature itself, and starting from the consciousness era of humanity. 'Form Follows Flow' metaphor has emphasized the concept of 'Flow' in architecture, and highlighted the significance of design criteria based upon flow of funds and flow follow-up of the waste within the framework of ecological calculations. Impacts of the 'Flow' concept have been explained through studies conducted on five sample projects. In the end, the mentioned two metaphors have been questioned with regards to their origins, similarities, and differences, and their impacts on design have thus been evaluated.
