Abstract (EN)
Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the effectivity of preoperative information and sedative premedication for decreasing preoperative anxiety of patients scheduled for elective surgery. Material and methods: Ninety ASA I-II patients aged between 20-65 scheduled for gynecological surgery in Dokuz Eylül University Hospital were included in the study. The day before the surgery all patient answered the STAI questionnaire. Patients were randomized into three groups. Group P: preoperative information was performed. Group F: peroral diazepam (Nervium®, Saba İlaç Sanayi) was given in the ward one hour before the surgery. Group K: No premedication or information was given to control patients. All patients were asked to answer STAI questionnaire again just before taken to the operation room. Results: Median State anxiety was 48 (23-70), Median Trait anxiety was 44 (31-67) and Median VAS was 50 (0-100) in all patients. After preoperative information, the state anxiety was lower significiantly in Group P (p<0.001). After diazepam, the state anxiety was lower significiantly in Group F (p<0.001). The median state anxiety of Group P and Group F that assessed just before the surgery were lower than Group K (in order p=023, p=0.007). There was no significiant difference between the state anxiety of Group P and Group F after the intervention (p=0.750) Conclusion: We found that both psychological and pharmacological premedication decrease preoperative state anxiety significiantly in female patients scheduled elective surgery. But there was no significiant difference between effectiveness of psychological and pharmacological premedication.
