Abstract (EN)

The reliable operation of modern power distribution networks is of paramount importance to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to consumers. Among the various issues pertaining to power quality, flicker stands out as a particularly prominent concern. This is due to the fact that flicker has the potential to disrupt the functionality of sensitive equipment and create inconvenience for end users. As a power quality issue, flickering reduces the efficiency of motors and generators, reduces the lifetime of electronic devices, and causes them to malfunction, whether momentarily or continuously. Flickers, which impair the efficiency of light sources if not detected, cause abrupt alterations in the luminosity of lighting elements. This negative impact on lighting not only diminishes energy efficiency but can also give rise to psychological issues, as it disrupts the human visual system. Consequently, performance is compromised due to flickering in domestic and commercial premises, while distractions can be observed in industrial organisations where dangerous work is carried out, which can cause significant accidents. Furthermore, flickering has been demonstrated to impair the functionality of computers, leading to operational errors and memory loss. This thesis addresses the critical task of detecting and analyzing flicker events in distribution networks, emphasizing their importance in ensuring stable and highly efficient power quality. In order to achieve this objective, a comprehensive approach is adopted, which includes the process of collecting data from real distribution networks. The data necessary for analysis is provided by the distribution operator, DEDAŞ, for the purposes of ensuring its authenticity and relevance. This study focuses on detecting and analysing flicker events obtained from real field data using power quality devices from DEDAŞ at centres where various loads are connected to transformers. The aim is to identify and record systematic changes in current and voltage signals caused by flicker in the transformers in question. The real data obtained, along with flicker detection and classification, will provide a solid foundation for future research, such as the extraction of new features. This approach will contribute significantly to existing literature by enabling the development of more sensitive and effective methods for monitoring and managing power quality in distribution networks. Once prepared for further analysis, the obtained data will facilitate a deeper understanding of the origins of flicker events and assist in developing new solutions to improve power quality management. In conclusion, this thesis expands the knowledge base on flicker analysis in distribution networks, emphasising the importance of flicker detection to ensure the reliability and quality of power distribution systems.
