Effect of critical reading teaching on critical reading skill

Critical reading is a form of language which involves higher level thinking skills that use of the text, questioning, analyzing and evaluating the process and passed through a restructuring by the reader. The aim of this study is to investigate effect of applied critical reading teaching that used 9thgrades Turkish Literature Lesson on critical reading skill and whether it changes or not according to sex. This research was arranged according to quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test designs control group. The study groups were chosen from the 9th grades students of Farabi Anatolian High School in Düzce. The data used for pre-test/post-test of the investigation was obtained from critical reading test. In the experimental group, "Texts and Tutorials Texts Events Evolving Around" teaching critical reading units prepared and processed in accordance with the control group, as deemed appropriate by the Ministry of Education curriculum has been followed. Data were analyzed by using the Repeated Measures Anova and Two Way Ancova Tests. As a result of the study, critical reading scores of the experimental group increased compared to the control group. According to the study, teaching of critical reading improves students' critical reading skills. There was no significant difference according to gender. To begin early age to teaching critical reading, the development of standard measurement tools and the using of different text types could be suggested.
