Abstract (EN)

In a general sense, slavery, which is denied the freedom of people and regarded as someone else's property, has been legalized with legal systems since the earliest periods. Slavery, seen as terrifying and impossible for mankind today, was considered legitimate in ancient times and the people was divided into two classes as freedoms and slaves. The freedoms, which are the sovereigns of all rights, buy and sell the slaves under their control as a commodity, leave them inherited, and force them to endure every punishment they may give, depriving the slaves in their control from the right and the ability to act. The institution of slavery was seen as an indispensable element in the economic life of old societies. Thus, the heavenly religions, who regard man as the supreme beings, even though they have not removed the slavery, have sought to be treated well in slaves. However, Islam has gone a step further and encouraged slaves to be resigned, and has revealed many ways for the slaves to enjoy their freedoms. In this context, Islamic societies, in the light of Qur'an and hadiths, have given different status to slavery institution. As a matter of fact, slaves who were not worthy in the old societies were employed in the highest civil servants of the state when it came to the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphate, defined under 'mevâlî' that is in a free and slave status or other names.
