Evaluation of oxidative stress markers and sociodemografic factors in child and adolescent with intellectual disability

Abstract (EN)
Objective: Recent studies proved that oxidative stress has a part in etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders. There are not enough studies on the relationship between oxidative stress and ID which is also a neurodevelopmental disorder. The aim of this study is evaluate the oxidative stress parameters and sociodemografic datas and their relationship with etiology of ID. Methods: The study includes 33 patients with Mild ID and 28 patients with Moderate-Severe ID according to DSM-5 criteria and 30 HCs matched for age and gender. IQ tests applied to patients and HCs to determine IQ scores and K-SADS-PL-DSM-5 was used to exclude other psychiatric disorders. Parameters that related with oxidative stress: LOOH, IMA, TAS, TOS, OSİ, dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis parameters were evaluated. Sociodemografic datas collected from sociodemografic form which designed by study researchers. These parameters evaluated for each 3 group separately and lastly evaluated for 2 groups: all ID patients and HCs. Results: Disulfide, TOS, OSİ, LOOH levels related to oxidative stress were found to be significantly higher in Mild ID patients compared to HCs. For Moderate-Severe ID group comparing HCs, this result was same except disulfid levels. Reduced thiol levels were found to be significantly lower; oxidized thiol and thiol oxidation-reduction levels were found to be significantly higher in Mild ID group compare to Moderate-Severe ID group. Disulfide, TOS, OSİ and LOOH levels related to oxidative stress were found to be significantly higher in ID patients compare to HCs. Discussion and Conclusion: In conclusion oxidative stress parameters found to be increased in child and adolescent with ID. Oxidative stress may have impact on etiopathogenesis of ID. However, further studies which has more patients and HCs and more specific parameters, needed to evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress and ID.
