Investigation of relationship between smart phone addiction level with perceived parenting attitudes among adolescents

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between smartphone addiction and perceived parent attitudes among adolescents. It has also been researched that smartphone addiction according to socio-demographic, socio-economic and smartphone usage situations. This study is a descriptive relationship study. 775 high school students (9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades) were enrolled in this study. They were chosen from high schools in Soma, Manisa at the education year of 2017-2018. 384 of sample were female, 391 of them were male. "Smartphone Addiction Scale" was used to asses smartphone addiction at adolescence."Parent Attitude Scale" was used to determine perceived parent attitudes."Personal Information Form" was given to adolescents in order to have their socio-demographic, socio-economic information and data about their smartphone use habits. SPSS 21.0 was used for all statistical analysis. Frequency distribution, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, T-Test, one-way ANOVA and Tukey Analysis were used for statistical analysis. As a result of this research, a negative relationship was found between smartphone addiction and perceived democratic parental attitude. It is observed that the level of smartphone addiction of adolescents who perceive their parents as democratic is higher than the level of smartphone addiction of adolescents who perceive their parents as authoritarian. This research was discussed by using the obtained data and some suggestions were created for the future studies.
