Investigation of psychological symptom levels in adolescents according to gender and family functions

The purpose of this study is to examine psychological symptom levels in adolescents between the ages of 14-18 in terms of gender and family functioning. The sample consists of a total of 801 adolescent students (429 girls and 342 boys) whose ages range from 14 to 18. The adolescent students are selected among Anatolian high schools and General - academic and private high schools which are affiliated by the Ministry of Education in Seyhan, Yüreğir, Sarıçam and Çukurova quarters in Adana via ?Cluster Sampling?. The data related to the students? family functions who participated in the present study were obtained through "Family Assessment Scale", the data related to psychological symptoms "Brief Symptom Inventory" prepared by the researcher and the data related to personal information "Information Form" were obtained. In the data analysis, 2 (male-female) X (healthy and unhealthy family functioning) factorial design with unrelated measures appropriate Two-Way Analysis of independent samples (ANOVA) was used. While psychological symptom levels of the participants on the gender and family problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavior control, there was no significant difference regarding the main effect of the general functions the host, psychological symptom levels of the participants on the gender and family problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavior control, a significant difference was found regarding the main effect of the general functions the host. When the results which have variables with statistically significant difference were investigated, it was found that ,according the main effect of gender, arithmetic mean of scores psychological symptoms of the female were higher than the male. Also according the main effect of family function, it was obtained that arithmetic mean of scores psychological symptoms of the adolescents with unhealty problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, and general functions in the family were higher than the adolescents with healthy problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, and general functions in the family.
