Studying the relation between sense of boredom in leisure, internet addiction and academic success of the adolescents

In this study, it was aimed to determine whether the sense of boredom, internet addiction and academic success of adolescents change according to their gender or not and the relation between the sense of boredom, internet addiction in leisure and academic success. In the research, quantitative research method was used and it was designed in relational screening model. While target population of the study consists of 223.565 female and 212.324 male totally 435.889 students who study at 106 Anatolian high school in Antalya in the education year of 2015-2016, sample consists of 460 female (Average age=16.18±0.64) and 460 male (Average age=16.38±0.71) totally 920 students (Average age=16.28±0.68) who are 10. and 11. grade and study at 4 high school which were chosen by stratified sampling. Data which were obtained from the students who joined in the study were obtained by using "Internet addiction scale" which was developed by Young (1996) and adapted to Turkish by Günüç and Kayri (2014), "Sense of boredom in leisure scale" which was developed by Iso-Ahola and Weissinger (1990) and adapted to Turkish by Kara, Gürbüz, Öncü (2014), and "Personal Information Questionnaire" which was prepared by researcher in order to determine some demographic features and academic success. In the study, frequency (%) arithmetic mean and standard deviation (Sd) were used in analysis of the data. Since normal distribution and homogeneity conditions did not occur in order to find the difference, Mann-Whitney U test from non-parametric tests was used in two independent groups. In order to determine the relation Pearson Moments Correlation Coefficient and simple linear regression analysis were used. Results were evaluated in 0.05 and 0.01 significance level. In conclusion of the study, it was found that adolescents who have the sense of boredom in leisure want to spend most of their time using the internet, they feel incomplete when they cannot reach internet, internet is a major factor in losing the sense of time, and academic success grades are negatively affected by this situation. In this context, it was reached that when looking at the sense of boredom in leisure, internet addiction and academic success grades, each one of them has a significant effect on others.
