Abstract (EN)

This study was planned to examine the perceptions, affect status and coping attitudes of adult emergency nurses about patient aggression. The study was conducted with 152 nurses actively working in the Adult Emergency Service of Istanbul Başakşehir City Hospital. Data were collected using Personal Information Form, Aggression Perceptions Scale, Impact of Patient Aggression on Carers Scale and Coping Attitudes Evaluation Scale COPE-R. Frequency tables and descriptive statistics were used to interpret the findings. It was determined that the average age of the nurses participating in the study was 27.17±2.33, the average duration of work in the emergency department was 2.7±1.4 years, 51.3% were women, 75.7% were single, 94.1% had a bachelor's degree, and 53.5% reported that they had not received any training on aggression management at the institution where they worked. While the verbal aggressive behavior types that were exposed were 59.9% insulting words, 55.9% threatening words, 44.1% swearing, expressions such as insults and reproaches were also seen. It has been determined that in the physical aggressive behavior types they are exposed to, 36.2% of them are pushed, 17.8% of them are attacked with an object, and 16.4% of them are kicked, while they are also exposed to harassment. A significant negative correlation was found between the age of the nurses and the deterioration of the relationship with the patient (r=-0.175; p=0.031). In line with these results, the ways and procedures to be followed in case nurses are exposed to aggression should be clearly and clearly determined by the relevant units. As in mental and nervous diseases hospitals, all emergency department nurses should be given aggression management training and their coping attitudes towards aggression should be examined, thus ensuring that they strengthen in terms of self-confidence and coping with fear. Periodic interviews should be provided for emergency department nurses of institutions in terms of their exposure to patient aggression. Key Words: Aggression, Adult Emergency Room, Patient Aggression
