Evaluation of the relationship of cognitive flexibility, intolerance of uncertainty and ruminative thought style in adult individuals

The aim of the study is to consider together the cognitive flexibility capacity, intolerance of uncertainty level and ruminative thinking tendency of adult individuals in the face of challenging life events and to evaluate whether there is a relationship between them. In addition, it was also examined whether they differed according to various demographic variables. The sample of there search consists of 453 adult individuals. During the data collection phase, Demographic Information Form, Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS-12), Cognitive Control and Flexibility Scale and Ruminative Thought Style Scale were used. While conducting data analysis of there search, Independent Sample T-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for comparisons between groups; Pearson correlation analysis was used in correlation analyses. Additionally, simple and multiple regression analyzes were conducted to examine the mediating effect of ruminative thinking style on the relationship between cognitive flexibility and intolerance of uncertainty. As a result of the analyses, significant differences were found between the total and subscale score averages of all scales according to the participants' perceived social support and socioeconomic levels. A significant positive relationship was observed between the irage and cognitive control scores over emotions. According to the findings, as intolerance of uncertainty and ruminative thinking levels increase, the level of cognitive flexibility decreases. Additionally, it was determined that ruminative thinking style had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between cognitive flexibility and intolerance of uncertainty. Finally, the findings were discussed considering other studies in the literature.
