Comparison of space configuration between old Ankara vineyard houses and contemporary villas

Housing design is one of the basic tools that transforms culture to reality in the physical world as well as respond to the demands of the resident. The way of built and usage of the house, reflects the life style. Therefore, it is possible to observe the effects of the changing needs on the cultural values of the society in housing designs.In the space syntax studies, it is mentioned that, cultural effects could be observed due to the tradition of creating and organizing spaces. These studies focus on the spatial locations and the meaning of their relationship within the system rather than the analytical data such as their forms, scales and textures while digitizing building?s features.Economy is the main factor that restricts the real wishes of the home dweller. The signs of the cultural effects on dwellings which is used by the higher income groups can be seen more clearly by means of the space syntax method. This study is an investigation on the relationships between the settings of the former Ankara vineyard houses and contemporary villas and the marks of the family life forming the community with specific reference to housing.In that regard, space syntax method uses basic aims at determining the difference and similarities between the utilization regulations of ?pre-republican Ankara house? and ?contemporary Ankara house?.In the end of this study, it was observed that; the changes in the family life and in the understanding of privacy effected the planning of domestic spaces. The additional functions to the houses were seen. The number of the transition spaces and system depth are higher in the villas than in the vineyard houses. In the villas, it was also observed that a flexible circulation plan has become more dominant and there are more spaces on the way of user followed within those cycles. Instead of the ?sofa? which has the highest space mean number in the Vineyard house, the entrees and hallways act as distributors in the villas and the bathing cubicles called ?gusülhane? has changed into the bathrooms that are added inside the bedrooms.
