The concept of nafs in at-Tafsiru'l Mazhari

The process of self-recognition and meaning of the human being has continued until today. Various concepts have accompanied man in this journey of meaning. Undoubtedly, the concept of soul is one of them. "What is the soul?" "What is its nature?", "What is its relationship with body, soul and death?" etc. questions have opened the door to many comments. It has been explained from different angles in many sciences. The concept of soul is also a Qur'anic concept. For this reason, Islamic scholars have different interpretations on the soul. In particular, the concept of soul, which is the subject of tafsir, has been explained by the commentators in the perspective of verses. In this study, we will examine the concept of soul based on the work of Senâullâh Pânîpetî, one of the important personalities of the Indian subcontinent and one of the leading sufi scholars, named et-Tefsiru'l Mazharî. The aim of this research is to express the interpretations of the concept of soul in et-Tafsiru'l Mazharî. In addition, it is to examine the interpretations of nafs in tafsirs comparatively and to make this concept more understandable. Our work consists of an introduction and two main titles. The first chapter deals with the life of our commentator Senâullâh Pânîpetî and the concept of soul. This section includes the period in which our commentator lived, his life and scientific personality. In the continuation of this section, the place of the concept of soul in lexicon and sciences is briefly stated. In addition to these, there are explanations of the types of nafs and the concepts related to the nafs. In the second part, which is the main part of our study, the interpretations of the nafs verses in Senâullâh Pânîpetî's work named et-Tefsiru'l Mazharî are explained.
