Abstract (EN)

The presented thesis was conducted to investigate the levels of methylglyoxal (MG) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in comparison with those found in healthy controls and to investigate the correlation between methylglyoxal and plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1c percentage, as well as lipid profiles, The study was conducted with 100 participants between November-December 2022. All participants were over 18 and separated into two groups. The first group contained 50 patients with type-2 diabetes diagnosed at Salah Al-Din Teaching Hospital. The second group included fifty healthy diabetics of the same age and gender. The means of methylglyoxal, fasting glucose, HbA1c, and lipid profiles, which include cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) concentrations, were higher in patients than in controls, while the mean of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) was lower in patients than in controls. In addition, a negative correlation was found between MG and lipid profile except for HDL, whereas there was no correlation between MG and lipid profile in regards to Hba1c. These results imply that hyperglycemia is viewed as a feature of the onset of diabetes sickness and that methylglyoxal is an indication of oxidative stress in type 2 diabetic patients. Additionally, hyperglycemia may contribute to the development of dyslipidemia.
