The wahhabi̇ percepti̇on of the Ottoman thi̇nkers i̇n the li̇ght of Eyüp Sabri̇ Paşa's work enti̇tled hi̇story of wahhabi̇

Eyüp Sabri Pasha is an Ottoman thinker who has lived in the Ottoman Empire during the Tansimat (Reform) Era. He was also a statesman who had served in various state duties within the Navy governance of the Ottoman Empire. Besides his statesman identity, when we evaluate Eyüp Sabri Pasha in regards to his life and literary works, we are faced with a versatile Ottoman thinker. He has many literary works that includes topics such as history, politics, religion, and society. One of Eyüp Sabri Pasha's outstanding works is called the Tarih-i Vehhabiyan (History of Wahhabi) which he wrote during the period he served in Hejaz. It is based on events told by the locals and literary works before his time that he used as reference. Tarih-i Vehhabiyan, covers political actions realized in the first age Hejaz region where Muhammed b. Abdülvehhab who wanted to convert religion to its origin, rejuvenate and struggle against bidats (concepts or things inserted later into religion) in the Nejd region, systemized the Wahhabism movement. Since Tarih-i Vehhabiyan tackles the Wahhabisim issue separately, it is important for understanding the viewpoint of the Ottoman Empire and its thinkers regarding Wahhabism. Some Ottoman thinkers who lived before and after the time of Eyüp Sabri Paşa's Tarih-i Vehhabiyan have also tackled the Wahhabism issue. It is possible to name some of them as Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, Ömer Câbî Efendi, Haydarizâde İbrahim Efendi, Hüseyin Hüsni, Ömer Rıza. Also to further understand the official viewpoint of the Ottoman Empire, substantial information regarding the Wahhabis can be found in historiographer works and official documents of that period. In this study, first Eyüp Sabri Pasha's life has been examined and his work Tarih-i Vehhabiyan was evaluated through his personality. In addition, Tarih-i Vehhabiyan was examined by comparing current works, works of Ottoman thinkers of that particular period and official Ottoman documentation.
