The concept of virtue in al-Farabi

The concept of virtue as a subject of study of philosophy of ethics has been addressed by many philosophers in the history of philosophy, starting with Socrates. This concept finds an important place for itself in the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle, the two great philosophers of the ancient world, and later in Neo-Platonism, as well as in the philosophy of Plotinus, one of his important representatives. With the access of important sources of Greek philosophy to the Islamic world, the concept of virtue has also become a notable topic of discussion from the point of view of Islamic philosophy. Our thesis aims to determine the place of the concept of virtue in the thought of Al-Farabi, the founder of Islamic philosophy as an Aristotelian philosopher, to find an answer to whether there is an Aristotelian influence in his philosophy when developing the concept of virtue and to reveal how it was possible for these two philosophers from different cultural and religious circles to meet in a common understanding of virtue if this influence is present. The hypothesis of our thesis is that Farabi coming from a different cultural environment as an Islamic philosopher was influenced by Aristotle's understanding of virtue and that his idea that virtuous religion and analytical philosophy would not contradict and that real philosophers would tell the same truth.
