The Relationship between the self-esteem, the level of trait anxiety, academic achievement of the adolescents in different high schools

V SUMMARY This study is designed to determine the relationship between self- esteem, trait anxiety and academic achievement of the adolescents from different types of schools in izmir. In this study 184, tenth grade students (87 female, 97 male) completed a survey that included Spielberger's Trait Anxiety Inventory, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Inventory and a questionary form. The student's final grades at the end of the first semester are taken as the criterion of academic achievement. The findings indicate that there is a statistically significant negative correlation between the academic achievement and self- esteem of the students. The self-esteem of the students are found to be effected by their SES and school type. It was found out that the students' perception of their physical appearance effected their level of trait anxiety, self-esteem and academic achievement. Also it was found out that the students who believe that their families have trust in their decisions and their behavior have high self-esteem. The students who have positive relations with their families have higher self-esteem, academic achievement than the students who have negative relations with their families. The students who have different club activities have higher self- esteem than the other students. The students' school choices are found to be effective on all of the variables. The students who don't have a friend of opposite sex have higher level of academic achievement than tha other students. It was found that self-esteem, level of trait anxiety and academic achievement are not related to the gender of the students. Also, the student's being a member of a reference group or not, and whether or not getting help from school guidance service are not statistically related to their level of trait anxiety, self-esteem and academic achievement.
