Abstract (EN)
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility to periodontal disease in overweight and obese individuals who applied to the periodontology department of our faculty and to investigate whether there is a comorbid relationship between these two conditions. Material and Method: A group of 180 patients was included in our study. Demographic and anthropometric measurements, dental habits, periodontal health status and periodontal parameters were recorded. Finally, our study aimed to investigate the relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics and obesity history of patients diagnosed with obesity and their perceptions, attitudes and beliefs towards obesity and weight loss using the Health Belief Model in Obesity. Patients were given an appointment for 3 months later and it was observed whether awareness of OSIMS was/was not formed. The data obtained were recorded and statistically evaluated. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between the groups in terms of plaque index, gingival index and probing depth (p<0.05). The importance of health scale scores of patients with periodontitis and gingivitis were significantly lower than healthy patients. A statistically significant difference was found between periodontal health status in terms of severity perception scale scores (p<0.05). The perception of seriousness scale score of those with periodontitis was significantly lower than those with healthy periodontal health. A statistically significant difference was found between periodontal health status in terms of benefit perception scale scores (p<0.05). 3 The perception of benefit scale score of those with periodontitis was significantly lower than those with gingivitis. Conclusion: Obesity has been found to be associated with periodontal disease. This relationship is thought to be a two-way interaction. Key Words: Periodontal health, periodontal disease, obesity, health belief model, health belief model in obesity
