Biotechnology education from the teachers' perspective

Compare with the others biotechnology is a new science field. For that reason biotechnology education is also a new topic of educational area in our country. The purpose of this research is to determine fundamental biotechnology conceps' knowledge and the stages of concern on biotechnological teaching subjects. For that purpose both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. In the quantitative part general screening model and in the qulitative part case study model were used. In order to determine the fundamental biotechnology conceps' knowledge of elemantary science teachers, Biotechnology Knowledge Scale was applied. Similarly, to define the stages of concern on biotechnological teaching subjects, Concern Questionnaire was used. Research was conducted on 112 elemantary science teachers in Osmaniye at the 2014- 2015 spring semester. Semi- structured interviews were done with the 15 teachers of the participants. Based on the analyses, it was found that most of the science teachers answered the fundamental biotechnology concepts knowledge questions correctly. And there is no statistically meaningfull differences between fundamental biotechnology concepts knowledge and gender. While there is a meaningfull diffrences between fundamental biotechnology concepts knowledge and work experience and faculty of graduation and whether a lesson on including biotechnology or genetics subjects were taken or not. The stages of concern on biotechnological teaching subjects of elemantary science teachers are varried. Generally, teachers' concerns condense at the awareness and knowledge level; however, at the personal concern , management and collaboration stage the level was found as low.
