Özet (EN)

Cultural and scientific developments in Renaissance period have suggested that a modern society could exist. Ideal of better lives which corresponds this urges reveals its reflection in utopias. However, connection between science and utopia which was built in Renaisance period began to break off in time. One of the basic reasons of this situation is that utopias have begun losing their critical and dynamic value due to approach towards utopias with the principle of feasibility. Another reason is that science has overlooked the ideal of better life and come into prominence in its technical and pragmatic aspects. Francis Bacon's understanding of science that focuses exactly on this philosophical problem has been held responsible for the rise in importance of science's technical aspect, in other words; for science becoming a meta full of ideologies. This thesis claims that Bacon's epistemology alone cannot be taken as the sole trigger of the catastrophic events of modern period. This argument has been arrived in result of researching the period he lived, his epistemology view about science and utopia design. This research has revealed stimulating paths of which can be rebuilt between science and utopia. On the contrary to common belief constructive reading of Bacon's epistemology, even though it involves a critic about modern science, questions utopias' share in this critic. Ultimately, it offers a suggestion about how utopias can be designed so that utopias can gain their critical function back and how science can be criticized by the utopian probability. This suggestion involves not only modern science-utopia connection but also the critic of Baconian epistemology. Keywords: Francis Bacon, Renaissance, Science, Utopia, İdols.
