The era of third republic in france and it's reflections to Turkish modernisation

Besides its historical effects within the French borders, the French Revolution in 1789 ensouled the age of Enlightenment with its popular known ideas such as eguality, freedom, fraternity, nationalism, republicanism. But the supporters of the ancien régime of France prevented the process of institutionalism of the revolution in the country so France had to exercise the foundation of the republican regime for five times. In that process, after Napoleon Bonaparte, Charles the Xth, Louis Philippe and Napoleon the 3rd took the lead, and the establishment of the 3rd Republic in France was implemented via a new revolution. With the effects of the era of the 3rd Republic in France, a new age was opened. Especially the notions like republicanism and laicism were placed into the mind of the new regime.The revolutionary ideas of the French Revolution entered into the Ottoman borders nearly after hundred years. The Ottoman intellectuals who escaped frpm the autocracy of Abdulhamid II to France, were impressed by these ideas. These intellectuals paved the way for the revolution of 1908 in the Ottoman Empire. This process is very important because it was the starting point of the foundation of the Turkish Republic and the Turkish modernisation. The founders of the Turkish Republic were impressed by the philosophy of the Enlightenment, the Jacobin Revolution and the radicalism of the 3rd Republic of France.In this thesis, the effects of the French Revolution and the 3rd Republic to the Turkish modernisation process is evaluated. Also the effects of France over the Ottoman intellectals, socio-economics, politics and cultural developments are prioritised. Especially, interactions between the French and Ottoman intellectuals and the effects of that over the founders of the Turkish Republic, such as Mustafa Kemal, are all explained.Keywords: The French Revolution, The 3rd Republic, Turkish Revolution, Republic, Laicism
