The impact of the amount of water usege of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers on political relations between republic of Turkey and Iraq

Political relations between the Republic of Turkey and Iraq have generally developed depending on the water. While the use of water in the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers was not a problem in the first years, the start of the Southeast Anatolia Project, the increase of the populations of the two countries and the drought started water problems. The problems between these two countries depending on the amount of water use have been resolved through political negotiations so far. For a solution, agreements have been made between them on water. Despite the agreements, every change of leadership in Iraq has brought new demands on water. Iraq; He has asked the Republic of Turkey to renegotiate the water. The Republic of Turkey has stated that it will comply with the amount of water emissions determined in previous agreements. Due to the demands, the water problem has not been fully solved until now. The reason the problem cannot be solved is because; It is that the Iraqi side demands more water than the amount of water that exists. His goal in his request is that he already wants to guarantee the water he will need in the future. Despite Iraq's demands, the Republic of Turkey has prepared the Three-Stage Plan according to UN and International Norms as a solution. The plan was based on the Doctrine of Fairness and Reasonable Use and tried to solve the problem by taking into account the needs of both states. The solution is to increase water-related cooperation between the Republic of Turkey and Iraq. To enable them to develop joint projects in the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers.
