The evaluation of the nurses working and Firat University hospital about hospital infections according to their knowledge,attitudes and behaviors

Hospital infections all over the world emerge as an important cause of mortality and morbidity.This search was carried out to evaluate nurses working at Firat University about hospital infections according to their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors.On this descriptive study, nurses (370 people) working at The Firat University formed the universe of this study. 87.8% of the nurses (325 people) were reached. The data of this search was obtained by a survey which involves some questions about socio-demographic features of nurses, their institution where they work and their working time, their participation status of the training program and the evaluation of nurses about hospital infections according to their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors. This survey was distributed to the nurses and collected. Data on statistical package program were evaluated by percentage, average and chi square (X²) analyzes.It was determined that average age of nurses included in the study was 27.49±5.67, 12.3% of them were men, 67.7% of them were found in their undergraduate and graduate education. It was founded that the average of vocational experience year was 73.04+67.53 months, 61.2% of them were educated about hospital infections and prevention paths, 74.8% of them knew the definition of hospital ifections and 40.3% of them knew the hospital infection which is the most common one. The avarage of the correct answers given for 19 questions about hospital infections is 11.90 ±2.47, 84.0% of them said that enough precautions haven?t been taken about hospital infections at hospitals where they worked. During 92.0% of the nurses were working at the hospital by using gloves, the ratio of using of gloves for each patient have fallen to 65.8% . 35.1% of nurses were bruised by a cutter and a piercing which contact patient liguids during operation and in this case it was detected that 25.4% of them cleaned the wounded area with betadine and 26.3% of them didn?t do anything.As a result, it was determined that the knowledge of the nurses working at Firat University Hospital about hospital infections and prevention paths was in medium level and behaviors of nurses which prevent hospital infections werent in sufficient level. For this reason, in the orientation and service training of nurses, hospital infections and prevention paths should be prioritized.Key Words: Hospital Infections, Nurse, Data, Behavior.
