Abstract (EN)
Intrigued by the origin of kiln construction this research sought out to find the possibility, process and limitations in the original kiln construction methods and materials. This master thesis investigates the possibility to implement local resources found on site to manufacturing a capable clay body to construct a kiln. The guidelines and test to identify soil textures and step by step process to fabricate a functional kiln is intended for interested ceramic artists with a basic knowledge.Information provided by researching primitive kilns, earthen cooking stoves and earthen ovens lead to examining the possibilities of this research. Referring to historical, primitive kilns and there functions to examine the basics in thermodynamics. Through mechanical and practical analysis of soil composition, tests and documentation were made to resolve possible solutions. Data accumulated from the research is used to fabricate a suitable clay body for kiln construction. Using the onsite resources a Roman updraft bottle or beehive kiln was constructed. The kiln was fired with gas and wood to 1000º C.Post firing results of the wares and the kiln were inspected. The research can be further developed with multiple firings and adjustments in kiln body composition. Accumulating more information and experience as new trial kilns are produced.İngilizce Anahtar Kelimeler:1- Kiln2- Ceramic3- Clay 4- Firing
