Frontinus' Strategies of War (Strategemata)

The thesis aims to examine Frontinus' war strategies (Strategemata). A Roman citizen, Frontinus held different positions on behalf of his state from 40 AD to 104 AD. When she was appointed as curator aqua in 97 AD, he prepared De Aquis Urbis Romae on the use of water resources and the condition of aqueducts. Apart from De Aquis Urbis Romae, another known work of Frontinus is the Strategemata, which gives information about Hellenic and Roman military strategies and was prepared for the use of generals. The Strategemata presented to Emperor Domitian by Frontinus consists of four books. The use of the term Strategema in the context of war strategies gained meaning with Frontinus, and the only Latin example of this genre was written by Frontinus between 84/88 AD. Frontinus describes himself as a military science theorist. The reason for this is that it attempts to convey to the reader the examples that show the characteristics of different people, communities, places and periods related to the war strategies scattered directly in the vast body of history as a field of study. He did not limit this information transfer to the Hellenic and Roman civilizations, but also gave information about the tactics of these civilizations, the allied or rival nations. The information mentioned in the Strategemata will be examined in terms of both ancient and modern sources. At the same time, which of the items in the Strategemata were quoted from other ancient sources will also be revealed. In cases where Frontinus does not provide detailed information in terms of warring parties, space and time, or in cases where it gives incomplete information, inferences will be made in the form of reasoning in the context of historical facts.
