Gaziantep machine carpet weaving field study and sustainable art designs

Gaziantep machine-made carpet sector has a structure that aims for sustainable growth by increasing its global competitiveness. In this context, the vision and mission of the sector are shaped in line with the principles of both economic and environmental sustainability. The Vision of Gaziantep Machine Carpet Industry is to consolidate its world leadership, develop sustainable production processes, offer innovative and artistic designs, and adapt to digitalization and smart production technologies. The Mission of Gaziantep Machine Carpeting is to blend tradition with modern production, to produce with environmental responsibility, to increase innovation and R&D investments, to contribute to the economy and employment, and to produce at international standards. In the study, the transformation of Gaziantep machine carpeting from past to present has been detailed and the effects of technological developments on the sector have been discussed. At the same time, the current situation of the sector was analyzed. Machine types used in carpet production, programs used in carpet design have been examined. Current export figures of Gaziantep carpet sector were analyzed and pattern design types were examined according to the exported region. The effects of associating the Gaziantep carpet sector's having a say in the world with the investment made in education are evaluated. In this direction, while Gaziantep carpet sector is shaping the future with a sustainable design approach, innovative approaches such as transforming waste materials into art are gaining importance. In the context of sustainability, the use of recycled materials in artistic designs has been investigated and waste management, ecological design and environmentally friendly production processes in carpet production have been emphasized. In this context, applications on the transformation of waste yarns and surplus carpet pieces into artistic forms such as relief paintings were also evaluated within the scope of the thesis. The findings show that sustainable art understanding has the potential to improve waste management in the carpet sector and that such practices can provide both economic and environmental benefits by bringing innovative design understanding to the sector. In this context, recommendations are presented for Gaziantep machine made carpet sector to achieve a more sustainable and innovative structure in the future.
