Evaluating of parents' expectations, experiences and reactions to routine ultrasound examinations during pregnancy and validity reliability of PEER-U (the scales parents' expectations, experiences and reactions to routine ultrasound examination) scale

Antenatal care aims to prepare secure conditions for mother and infant by partly reducing or completely eliminating the risks which may occur during the pregnancy, birth and after birth. Ultrasound is one of the most common used examination methods in antenatal monitoring. In this study PEER-U scale -which has been developed to measure expectations, experiences and reactions of parents through routine pregnancy ultrasound examinations- is adapted to Turkish Language and it is aimed to determine its validity and reliability methodically. This study was performed in a private hospital's pregnancy policlinics from 01/01/2016 to 30/04/2016. Its universe consisted of parents who come for pregnancy polyclinics in the private hospital. The sample was consisted of 436 parents who participated in the study willingly, first pregnancy / paternity experience, second trimester of pregnancy, normal findings after ultrasonography, and no communication difficulty. Validity and reliability analysis of the scale was used language, content, construct, parallel form validity and Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The language validity of the PEER-U Scale was provided with the group and back translation and then the content validity was provided by making the required corrections in line with the expert recommendations. Explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were performed to determine the construct validity of the PEER-U Scale. After validity analysis of PEER-U Scale, before-ultrasound scale was converted into 6 sub-dimensions and 21 items; after-ultrasound scale was converted into 5 sub-dimensions and 21 items. After explanatory factor analysis, the percentage of variance describing the scale is sufficient; The fit indixes of the scale were found in the appropriate range after confirmatory factor analysis. Internal consistency analyses, it was determined that the total score correlations of items were sufficient; the total Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the before-ultrasound scale was found 0,65, Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the after-ultrasound was found 0,89. As a consequence, the Turkish form of PEER-U Scale was determined to be a valid and reliable measurement instrument for Turkish society.
