II SUMMARY Masters Thesis THE STABILITY ANALYSIS OF EARTH FILLING DAMS ON PERVIOUS BASE Ahmet BAYLAR Fırat University Graduate School Natural and Applied Science Department of Civil Engineering 1994, Page: 92 In engineering the stability of slopes takes a great place mainly on the construction of road, railways, dams, bridges, buildings, earth dams and behind them water holding fills. Stability problem of slopes is more often encountered today as a result of increasing number of modern highway and dam constructions. For the slope stability analysis of the filling dams, highway filling and exacavations, the shear surface of slopes is usually chosen as circular. Applying different methods, the shape of shear surface can be determined arbitrarily. In this study, a formül was developed to obtained shear surface of fillings on soft soil for easy calculation. The rupture phenomenon of soil was used as method. The analytically obtained slip surface was compared to the slip surface which has been obtained by using Stable computer program. As a result of these comparisions, it has been concluded that the presented slip surface equationhas well appoximation to the true slip surface. Thus, the slip surface of fillings on soft soil can be obtained by using the given formula KEY WORDS: Stability of slopes, dam, shear surface, safety factor, soft soil, filling.
