The Yoshi Oida method in the context of acting in traditional Japanese theater and synthesis with the west

The 20th century has been an era in which many Western theater theorists have fronted to the East as an intercultural trend, with the developments experienced in the West and the reperception of culture. Peter Brook, who established the Center International de Creations Theatrales (CIRT) in Paris and searched the traditional theater forms of the East with the stage actor group in seeking of the ritual theater, is one of the leading names of these theorists. This dissertation study examines the acting method created by Japanese actror Yoshi Oida, who has become the symbol of the group, by synthesizing the traditional Japanese Theater techniques and contemporary theater practices after his "CIRT" experiences. In the first part of this dissertation study consisting of two parts, Nō-Kyōgen, Kabuki, and Bunraku types, which are the three main types of Traditional Japanese Theater, which is the starting point of the basic units of the method, have been investigated. In the second part of the study in which the Yoshi Oida Method has been analyzed, the life of Yoshi Oida and the basic principles of the Oida Method have been investigated first and the effects of the concepts that were created by Zeami Motokiyo have been examined. Then, the structures called "Phenomenological Structure" and "Basic Structure", which constitute the main units of the method, have been investigated together with the practices. At the end of the section, Breathing-Voice exercises, which are one of the main dynamics of the method, and the approach of the method to the text, partner and audience relationship that the actor relates to during the role study process were examined and evaluated. This study aims to bring the Yoshi Oida Method in, which offers solutions with traditional Japanese acting techniques and cultural elements to the problems encountered especially by Western actors during the plays and stage practices, as a method to be used in acting training and role preparation process.
