Evaluation of the results of hip ultrasonography which applied for screening of developmental hip dysplasia.

Developmental hip dysplasia is a disease that may be successfully treated with early diagnosis. Between the 2007 and 2010 years, in Fırat University Medical Faculty, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology clinic, 620 hips of 301 infants with the age of 0-9 months were examined with ultrasonography (USG) by using the Graf method for developmental hip dysplasia (DDH) screening. There were 137 boys and 173 girls of our patients.As a results; according to the Graf method, of 620 hips, 43 (% 6.93) were tip Ia, 486 (% 78.39 ) were tip Ib, 59 (%9.52) were tip IIa, 2 (% 0.32) were tip IIb, 9 (%1.45) were tip IIc, 5 (%0.81) were tip D, 13 (%2.1) were tip III and 3 (%0.48) were tip IV. In our study, the frequency of hip dysplasia was found %14.7 and the frequency of hip dislocation was found %3.4.In our study, the high frequency of hip dysplasia was depended on founding more tip IIa (+) hips and the high frequency of hip dislocation was depended on founding more infants come to our clinic for suspected of hip dislocation.Although parents were informed about DDH, most of them did not come for control USG examination was showed us that some belief still did not changed in our region and national health policy is inadequate.USG is important in early diagnosis and follow-up of DDH. In our study, many tip II (+) hips whose control USG is neccessary were found.In conclusion; static hip USG is an easy applicable, interpretable, safe and efficient method that can be used for early diagnosis and follow-up of DDH and USG examination should be performed in all newborns.Key words : Hip dysplasia, ultrasonography, early diagnosis, screening.
