Occupational health and safety practices on ships

The ship industry is an important part of global trade and it affects the lives of millions of people working on ships. Ship operators implement a series of occupational health and safety practices for the safety of the crew and passengers. However, accidents in ships continue to be a serious problem. Accidents in the ship industry pose a significant threat to the health and safety of ship workers. These accidents can occur in various forms, such as ship accidents, fires, poisoning, slips, and falls. The causes of these accidents include human error, poor equipment maintenance, unsafe working conditions, and poor design and construction factors. The aim of this thesis is to examine occupational health and safety practices in the ship industry, provide information by comparing accidents in different ship classes using a comparative method, identify common areas and critical activities across all ship classes, determine potential hazards in these areas and activities, prepare safety checklists to be used by responsible personnel for high-risk areas and activities that encompass all ship classes, establish an onboard audit mechanism based on these checklists to conduct risk assessments and prevent potential accidents, and increase the awareness of ship personnel.
