Relationship between leadership styles and organizational commitment of provincial directorate of youth servi̇ces and sports: Adana GHSIM sample

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is examines the managerial leadership style and organizational commitment levels that GHSİM ( Provincial Directorate of Youth Services and Sports) employees perceive and their relationship with each other. The study is a descriptive research and in this study the main body of the study is composed of all the individuals working in Adana Provincial Directorate of Youth Services and Sports. 130 persons (34 female, 87 male) who voluntarily participated in the study were included. As a data gathering tool, a two-part questionnaire developed for the purpose of this study was given by "face-to-face survey" method and the necessary information has been collected back after it has been made. When the questionnaires were collected, all the questionnaires collected were evaluated because the filling errors were corrected at the time of application. In the first part of the questionnaire demographic information about the individuals is shown, in the second part, "Leadership Style Scale" developed by Ekvall and Arvonen (1991) and adapted to Turkish by Tengilimoğlu (2005) and Meyer et al (1993) an 18 item organizational commitment scale was used. In the course of the analysis of the data, frequency and percentage distributions describing the personal characteristics of the GHSİM staff, which constituted the sample group in accordance with the objectives of the study were drawn. The arithmetic mean and standard deviation of responses given to the scales were calculated and the distributions related to the levels of managerial leadership styles and organizational commitment that the staff perceived were determined. Independent variables related to sub problems; perceived managerial leadership styles and levels of organizational commitment were tested with nonparametric tests. Mann-Whitney U Test for binary comparisons and Kruskal-Wallis Variance Analysis for multiple comparisons. The Spearman Brown Row Differences Correlation (r) coefficient technique was used to determine the relationship between managerial leadership styles and organizational commitment levels that GHSİM staff perceives. As a conclusion, while no significant difference was found in the variables of gender, occupational seniority, duration of institutional work according to organizational commitment scale, according to the income variable, there were significant differences in subordinate continuity and emotional commitment subscales of organizational commitment scale subscale, continuity subscale of education status variable. While there is no significant difference in the variables of gender and age, occupational seniority, duration of institution in the dimension of leadership styles, there were significant differences in the focused leadership sub-dimension that works according to the level of income level, the focus of the production oriented and working oriented leadership according to the education state variable. While there was no relationship between leadership style scale, occupationally focused leadership sub-dimension and organizational commitment scale, normative commitment (r = -0,104; P> 0,05), it was found that there was a moderately positive relationship between low level positive relationship and continuity commitment (r = 0,469; P <0,01) subscale between emotional commitment (r = 0,195; P <0,05).
