Abstract (EN)

Giovanni Bottesini was considered one of the most distinguished and influential 19th century composers for the double bass. His works expanded the technical and expressive possibilities of his instrument beyond the limits expected by both composers and listeners. Today, Bottesini's compositions form part of many school curricula, orchestral auditions, solo competitions and recital programs. Among the traditional interpretations of Bottesini's double bass music, strong reliance has been placed on his influence from Italian opera. Although Italian opera played a fundamental role in the musical culture of the nineteenth century, it is crucial to consider other influences that influenced Bottesini's style of composition.
