Abstract (EN)
Culture refers to shared values and ways of communicating. It shapes our view of reality and is shared by people who assume that they share the same reality. Interactions between people from different cultures - societies - can be fraught with difficulties and misunderstandings, especially when the parties involved do not realize that they are actually occupying different realities. Kimmel calls commonalities between the two sides microcultures that exist simply because of shared perceptions and expectations. The absence of these microcultures between the two parties leads to misunderstandings and even the failure of negotiations. When the two sides' thoughts are completely different, both sides tend to find each other disruptive because they have completely different perceptions of normalcy. This generally makes us assume that this person is misbehaving or being unreasonable. For fundamentally different cultures, both sides would have different cultural preferences, rights or wrongs, and of course prohibitions. In the context of cultural prohibitions, there are taboos in intercultural exchanges that require knowledge on both sides of the communication. Kimmel argues that most international conflicts are based on different perceptions of social reality, i.e., different cultures' understanding of their needs and the world around them. Therefore, Different Cultures would need mediators and preparations to avoid any taboo-related misunderstandings. Different cultures understand their needs in different ways. Keywords: culture, taboo, intercultural communication
