Key element enrichments and its environmental impacts in Gölbaşi (Adiyaman) coals

Abstract (EN)

In our country, there are significant amounts of lignite reserves in Gölbaşı (Adıyaman) Region. Lignites are located in Neogene aged rocks. Base rocks in the coals in the region are seen as coal-trace clay units, clay, marly layers from top to bottom, and silty, sandy and pebbly lithologies in the lower part. Ceiling rocks of coal; It consists of calcareous clay, blue colored clay and pebbles. As a result of the extraction and burning of coal, which has the most reserves in our country, among fossil fuels, coal has various effects on the environment and animal health depending on the element enrichment type. The determined main-trace element amounts were compared with the coals in various regions of the world, and high-value elements were determined and their effects in terms of environment and living health were evaluated. In addition, correlation matrices were created by calculating the pearson correlation coefficient with the help of statistical analysis, and the relations of the elements with each other were revealed and inferences were made about their environmental origin with the help of XRD whole rock and detailed clay analyzes. According to the main-trace element analysis evaluation results, when the world lignite averages are taken as a reference in the samples belonging to the coal and coal-bearing units of the study area, the trace elements remaining above the average value are Be, Sc, V, Co, Ni, Zn, Se, Sr, Zr, Nb, Mo, it is designated as Sn, Sb, Ba, W, and U. When these elements are evaluated from an environmental point of view, it has been concluded that Ba, Co, Sb, Be, Zn, Se, Mo and U elements have negative effects on the environment and living health. According to the results of XRD whole rock and clay analysis, their abundance was determined as quartz, calcite, clay minerals, dolomite, feldspar, gypsum, pyrite, mica and chlorite minerals. Clay minerals were determined as smectite, illite, kaolinite and chlorite minerals. Dominant clay minerals were smectite, illite and chlorite. The distribution and different ratios of clay minerals lead to the conclusion that they belong to detrital origin from outside the basin.
