Özet (EN)

Disability has been defined as an interaction between individual with impairments, social and environmental barriers that prevents their inclusion into social life. Impairment of social life can be create a lack for disabled individual's point of view. However, what is the relationship between disability and lack was not examined in clinical psychology. The aim of the current study is to examine how visually impaired people perceive their disability: loss or lack. Due to the subjectivity of disability, generalized formulations may not be useful in understanding the perception of disability related to loss or lack. Hence, the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which is a qualitative research approach, is utilized in this study. The participants were six females whose ages ranged from 19 to 27. Data was collected through semi-structured, in depth, and one-on-one interviews, and analyzed through IPA. Five themes were constructed after the analysis: the feeling of lack defined by the others; the defective defined by the sighted; the referrals made to define disability and lived experiences; Assigned roles for the blinds and emotional reactions that occur with victimization as a result of unmet needs and experiences. Considering all themes together, visually impaired individuals perceive their disability as lack with the effects and interpretations of their important others.
