Depiction of imaginary gardens in visual arts

Since the early ages humans have created their own history by transforming nature. The first part of this thesis examines the relationship between humans and nature. The production activity and the creation of gardens, while fighting for survival in nature, are seen as the first cultural achievements of humanity. The evolution of gardens through the ages and their local characteristics are explained in the first part of the thesis named 'A Short History of Gardens'. This part investigates the forms gardens take according to cultures and beliefs they are created in, discusses the link between gardens and philosophy, and investigates their place in human thinking. The second part of the thesis covers the definition of imaginary gardens and their place and importance in human life throughout history. While some myths point to imaginary gardens after life as a prize for actions or heroism on earth, others point to these heavenly gardens here on earth. These utopic garden myths share many similar characteristics despite differences between periods and physical conditions. Different artists have given life to these myths/ideals in many ways at different times in history. This part of the thesis investigates reflections of Imaginary Gardens in European, Eastern and Far Eastern art and philosophical and social dimensions as well as including analytical and comparative studies of examples in visual arts. In investigating the concept of gardens in monotheistic and polytheistic religions as well as on earth, and many myths such as Gardens of Heaven, Golden Age and Tree of Life, this study recognises the concept of imaginary garden as an important source of inspiration in visual arts.
