"do/design it yourself" (DIY) approach and post-digital quest with conventional methods in graphic design

The digital revolution in our day alters the environment we live in, the social structure and order in many ways just like the industrial revolution. In addition, graphic design is also influenced by all these changes and it heads for new quests. Balances in graphic design also change along with digitalization. Conventional printing techniques are replaced by digital printing techniques and many materials that are used as hard copies are replaced by e- books, e-applications and such emerging technologies. While the interaction of the designer with technology provides a multi-disciplinary field of study for design, it becomes harder for graphic designers to make themselves visible among limitless options. While digitalization is moving at full speed in the design field, many designers begin to use old tools by following the footprints of the craft and turn towards experimental processes. Designers don't consider the computer as their only option and they rediscover many hand tools that they can use. Designers proficiently combine elements such as the old-new, digital-analog and conventional-modern using experimental methods and with great skill, they create original designs carrying their traces. This research aims at taking into consideration a type of graphic designer, who appeals to touching feeling and does not consider the digital environment as the only option; tries to exist with the artisan aspect while he/she effectively uses his/her creativity, imagination and handmade style, thus experiences experimentality. The research suggests designers to reinterpret the handmade concept with "Design It Yourself" (DIY) approach and look for ways to continue their existence uniquely just like in the Arts and Crafts Movement. It is thought that the study project, which blends the conventional methods and digital methods will be an inspiration for designers in our day. During the research, beside the exploration of the literature sources, also interviews with three designers who perform their works integrating handmade with graphic design has been done. In addition, an installation project, prepared by the mainly use of traditional methods with 'Do/Design It Yourself'' (DIY) approach and also digital tools has been carried out.
