Today's Turkish painting art approach of the line as plastic element in abstract trends

From the early artworks of the human history, to the present, line has always been an irreplaceable part of the painting. Obviously, in nature, there are no real lines separating living things or non-living things. However, to transfer the observed scene to the painting, line is needed even in the simplest case. The value it has in the work has changed with different artists and art movements in the process and turned into a powerful tool that conveys the meaning of painting. This element, which enables the concrete nature to be transferred to the two-dimensional canvas in figurative painting, facilitates the abstraction by freeing this two-dimensional nature from its limitations in abstract painting. Even the just line itself, can carry different meanings. In cubism, a different description of the observed world emerges with the geometric lines. In abstract painting, objects are so abstracted from their real context that they sometimes turn into a single line. In fact, the line sometimes represents itself rather than the purpose of expressing the object. Abstract meanings hidden inside the line are expressed in the shape of the line. From the perspective of the audience, the effect of angular or circular lines, complex or discrete lines, repetitive or singular lines is very different from each other. This enables the line to carry even the meanings that cannot be expressed in concrete to the canvas. In this study, the painting movements and different painting techniques in Western painting are evaluated with their linear features and the use of line in Turkish abstract painting is examined. In the light of this examination, the approach of the line element in Baki Bodur's paintings was investigated. Key words: Line, Abstract painting, Turkish art of painting
