Abstract (EN)

This thesis examines the concept of surveillance and control in the context of photography and photo-based technologies. Today, with the development of technology, surveillance activities have increased. In recent years, with the introduction of social media channels into our lives, people have started to be monitored through the platforms they use to socialize. The surveillance of people from all areas has revealed the problem of privacy. In the context of the thesis, the past, present and future uses of photography, which is an important tool in surveillance activities, were investigated. This thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, surveillance and surveillance systems are examined. In the Modern Period, surveillance and control practices have started to be implemented with the changing social structure. The Panopticon, which was designed as an architectural structure in 1785, emphasized the importance of the concept of surveillance. The Panopticon, which is a structure that models both the observation and control dimension of the mass and its social and psychological situation, which has made the concept of surveillance a design problem, has also created the context of the conceptual and practical discussion of the subject. With the developing technology, new types of the Panopticon concept have emerged. The concept of control, which constitutes the main purpose of surveillance, has been important for these practices. Photography, one of the inventions of the 19th century, was evaluated in terms of surveillance and control. In the second part, the use of photography, which is also one of the surveillance and control tools, for surveillance practices is examined. Within the scope of the chapter, war photography, the use of photographs by police organizations as a means of surveillance, the use of spy cameras, aerial photography and the role of photography in Ottoman history were investigated. New possibilities of technique and the 20th century. The change of surveillance practices with the developing technological opportunities of the century has been investigated within the scope of Mobese, drones and satellites. For the surveillance ideas of the 21st century, the September 11 attacks were evaluated in terms of surveillance practices. Chapter 2 on the future of photography in Part III. Together with the issues in the chapter, the systematic dimension of surveillance was discussed and determined. The role of photography in today's surveillance age is discussed and the position of photography between realities, its role in social media channels and its role in virtual universes such as virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality are investigated. In the context of the thesis, the role of new realities related to the use and future of photography in terms of surveillance and control was investigated, and the protection of personal data and the existence of our personal data in virtual universes were examined.
