Özet (EN)

In this thesis study named ?Feeling of Insecurity and Militarisation of Residental Areas: Diyarbakır City Case Study?, we tried to conduct a descriptive study about reasons behind security precautions in gated communities and self replication of these factors in public sphere. To achieve the aim of study, we interviewed with residents of gated communities and analysed the gathered data. In the light of changes in urban area of city, we tried to explain relationships between effects of changes and attitudes of residents. We tried to analyse the high security gated communities with a broader perspective including economical, social, cultural and political factors and their complex interaction with each other. Interviews with residents are used for understanding the effects of structural change. After analysing the gathered data, we made comparisons between gated communities in Diyarbakır city with generic gated community properties; analysed causes behind formation and propagation of insecurity feeling; evaluated relationship between gated communityresidents' former dwellings and its effects on feeling insecure; evaluated relationship between new security facilities of gated communities and feeling insecure while considering structural, architectural advantages and tried to determine the desire to live in a neighbourhood with similar social status and economic income while using the luxury residences as a status symbol. It is concluded that residental areas and gated communities which are legitimized and shaped with feeling of insecurity are being militarised, got isolated from the city and cause urban segregation. Keywords: City, Urbanisation, Urban Segregation, Public Space, Privacy, Crime,Security
