Muhammad Abū Shahba's understanding of miracles in the context of his hadithism

The Prophet's hadiths and Sunnah have been a great relic and a treasured heritage for subsequent generations. Islamic scholars have preserved this relic for fourteen centuries and developed the science of hadith with a discipline that no other discipline has been able to match. In addition to scholars who preserved the traditional understanding of hadith, scholars who adopted the modern understanding of hadith also contributed to the science of hadith. Rationalism, which first evaluated the narrations with the premises of reason and science, and the reformist movements that arose from the idea that Muslims were lagging behind the times, were primarily directed towards the science of hadith. The Egyptian scholar Muhammad Abū Shahba was at the center of these intellectual movements of his time, and he revealed the acceptable or absolutely rejectable aspects of the Western-influenced and rapidly spreading approaches to the Sunnah through his works, refutations, audio and written publications, and talks and conferences for the masses of people and scholars until the end of his life. The study consists of an introduction, two chapters and a conclusion. In the first part, Abu Shahba's line on hadith and sunnah based on his works, and in the second part, his approaches to "miracle" are analyzed. Abū Shahba's treatise "Isrā' and mirāj" was used as the main source for his views on the issue of miracles. This study aims to reveal Abū Shahba's main references for the acceptance or rejection of the Prophet's sensory miracles, and to compare the views on miracle held by prominent scholars and researchers in Egypt in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with al-Azhar's traditionalist understanding of miracle adopted by Abū Shahba. The study concludes that the author evaluates the miracle in a wide spectrum in terms of its scope and that his views on the miracle issue are positioned against the Orientalist and Modernist approaches.
