Social integration and religion in Halide Edip Adıvar

Humans are social beings who cannot live alone by nature. The need for people to live together by nature has created societies. As a natural result of the organization of individuals in the form of society, social integration is manifested. Just as there is a dialectical relationship between the individual and society, there is also a dialectical relationship between religion and society. In this context, the main subject of our study is the relationship between social integration and religion.The main purpose of our study is to reveal the relationship between religion and social integration, to identify the religious, national and other elements that provide and disrupt social integration in Halide Edip Adıvar's stories and novels describing the period of national struggle, and to reveal the functions of religion on these elements.In this respect, answers to the following research questions were sought: Is religion an effective factor on the integration of societies? Is religion an effective factor in the separation of societies? Do the religious, national and other elements in Halide Edip Adıvar's story and novels have an impact on social integration and segregation? Are religious and national elements effective on the integration of the Turkish Nation during the period of national struggle? In the research, the data obtained by using the indirect observation method in Halide Edip Adıvar's stories of the national struggle, Vurma Fatma, Emine'nin Şehadeti and Bayrakımız Altında, and her novels Ateşten Gömlek and Vurun Kahpeye, were examined with the document analysis method. As a result of the research, it was determined that religion has two functions on social integration: integrative and divisive. While elements such as independence, martyrdom, flag, homeland, Sultan Ahmet rally , education, Mawlid ceremony and homeland ideal in Halide Edip Adıvar's stories and novels perform an integrative function on the Turkish Nation, religion is one of the leading elements that support the integrative function of these elements. It was determined that elements such as religion, mandate, personal interest and jealousy perform a divisive function on the Turkish Nation. It was determined that the phenomenon of violence supported by religion performed an integrative and divisive function on the Greek army. As a result, when the fate of the Turkish nation was kneaded in the grip of the scorpion, religion, which was among the elements that provided social integration and separation, performed important functions.
