Belonging and indentity in Halit Ziya Uşakligil's novels

Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, started to write the first successful novels in our literature in the Western style and to make the technical features of the genre clear. In this study, by examining Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil's novels in terms of belonging and identity, the traces of these concepts in the novels have been determined based on the titles of belonging and identity we have identified. In the novels of Halit Ziya, we see that heroes move away from the sense of national belonging by thinking and behaviors. The lack of religious signs in the novels and the fact that the heroes do not exhibit religious behaviors except for a few people indicate that the religious belonging of the character is broken. In the typology of men and women who are independent from their occupations and away from their sense of professional belonging, the sense of belonging in terms of gender is given by the intensity of behaviors that bring sexuality to the forefront. However, there are no deviations in the sexual roles of the individuals and no gender identities at the extremes are encountered. Halit Ziya's novels are characters who have a moral identity that has been distanced from their national identities by the influence of Western culture and has been corrupted in terms of male-female relations. Apart from a few older women, some of the heroes who have been isolated from religious identity have preferred idealized professions and some have preferred occupations directed by the present conditions. Women and men who make up different typologies in terms of gender are mostly identities who have adopted the Western lifestyle. For this reason, Western elements, thoughts and behavior patterns are frequently mentioned in Halit Ziya's novels.
