Material management in hospitals and a case study

One of the important aim of hospitals is to use the resources effective and efficiently.Materials are needed for hospitals to give service effectively. And at the right time. Alsomaterial expenses is an important part of total hospital budget.The main purpose of this study is to explain the management process of materials athospitals with an example from Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Otorhinolaryngology Clinic.Another purpose is to point that although the clinic constitutes sample there are problems intime between providing and usage of materials because of the troubles in the system.First part of the study includes general information about material management, theimportance of material management for hospitals and businesses and material managementorganization models.In the second part of the study, informations about material management functionincludes planning the material requirement, purchasing and methods of purchasing, stockcontrol methods, storage, transporting and distributing, quality control and assessment ofwaste products is introduced.In the third part, field research is made for material management applications. In theresearch organization of Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Otorhinolaryngology Clinic,politics of material management and process of material management with an example of 4entry expenditure and 1 entry inventory stock are tried to explain.In the forth part results of the study are arranged and to set up central materialmanagement unit is recommended.Key Words: Material, Material Management, Hospital, Hospital Organization,Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty
